Chapter Twelve
The red dress I picked out showed a minimum of cleavage, and went down to my lower thighs, but it was quite conforming at the same time. It had a thin single crisscross strap that crossed my upper chest and went around the back of my neck, and I wore black heels and a matching black clutch purse. I felt sexy in it, but it wasnât a clubbing dress, it was conservative for its type.
It was definitely a dinner date dress. I wasnât quite in panic mode anymore. I was excited by the date, if a little worried and confused still about Markâs intentions for the night. Iâd decided to just enjoy myself, and kind of figure things out as I went. If nothing else, a dinner cruise surrounded by the oceanâs water sounded like fun.
My almost calm outlook about it came from talking it out with Katie on the phone earlier, of course she was still at her store until closing, and her date wouldnât start for a few hours. The calm was apparently fragile however, because as soon as I felt his aura near the house my stomach started to do the butterfly dance again.
There was a knock on the door a moment later, and I headed downstairs to answer the door.
Mark looked great, perfectly groomed. He was six foot one, with short black hair and gray eyes that were more intense than I remembered as he studied me for a moment, and I returned the favor. He had on dark gray dockers, black belt and shoes, and a dark blue silk button down shirt.
It was also clear to me I hadnât imagined our past interactions. The attraction I felt in that moment included physical reactions and tingles, and if the admiration in his eyes was any indication, he felt it as strongly as I did. Of course, chemical attraction was a horrible base for a relationship, but it was a hell of a good start. This is what a date should feel like, not settling for a polite but cute person who didnât stir things in me. I did wonder if his aura of magic contributed to that, he was a very powerful vampire, and the air magic danced about him.
He said, âYou look divine, Danielle.â
Compliment means a date, right? I pushed the confusion away, my mind always going back to the fact heâd waited four months to ask me out. It was odd, but I wouldnât let it ruin my night, and it was just a first date. I wasnât going to marry him, or even sleep with him that night.
I smiled brightly, âThanks, so do you.â
He stepped back, âWe should go, or weâll miss our dinner boat.â
I laughed, âBy all means,â I stepped out and closed the door. I was a little bemused and charmed by the fact he opened the passenger door for me, then closed it when I got inside. I guess one of the hazards of dating a vampire of advanced years was Iâd have to deal with chivalry.
